Principal Chief Electrical Engineer is overall in-charge of Electrical Department.
 
Responsibility:
          The Electrical Services Section responsible for:-
  • Purchase of electricity at 66 KV from PSPCL. Distribution & utilization of power supply.
  • Improving the quality of power supply. Operation and maintenance of Electrical assets.
  • Operation & maintenance of air-conditioning services. Energy conservation.
  • Promotion of non-conventional sources of energy. Operation & maintenance of standby DG sets.
  • Operation & maintenance of telecommunication facilities. Planning & execution of related works.
1.Power Supply:
  • PLW purchases electrical energy from PSPCL as single point supply. Electrical power supply, for the entire complex of workshop and colony, is received at 66 KV from 220 KV grid substation of PSPCL at Ablowal. The supply is received through a 10 Km long 66 KV single circuit overhead line. The maintenance of 66 KV overhead line is with PSPCL.
  • The electrical supply at 66 KV is stepped down to 11 KV at Main Receiving Station (MRS) at PLW Workshop through two number transformers of 6.3/8 MVA and 10/12.5MVA capacity and further distributed to the various load centers through 11 KV HT network of seven numbers of electrical sub stations in the workshop area and three numbers electrical sub stations in the colony area. All the ten numbers electrical sub stations are connected through HT ring main underground cable system.
  • The total sanctioned connected load of PLW at present is 25566 KW and the sanctioned contract demand is 5000 KVA and further reduction to 4000 KVA has been initiated . The electricity tariff of PSPCL is the single part tariff applicable for Category IV consumers of PSPCL.
  • The power factor of PLW power supply is maintained at the level of 1.00 (Unity) which is one of the best among the industrial sector of Punjab. Each electrical sub-station, pumping installations, street light feeder pillars have been provided with LT power capacitor banks to improve the power factor.
  • The maintenance of the 66/11 KV switch yard at MRS including the control room is done by PLW and periodical testing of the equipments are being got done through Sr. XEN/Protection / PSPCL /Patiala on half yearly basis.

5.  Green Initiatives
  • 2.15 MW Rooftop Solar Power Plant are installed in PLW Complex.
  • One fifth of the energy demand of the complex is being met from the plant.
 
6.  Telecommunication:
A digital Electronic(IP Based EPABX exchange) of 1500 lines is working in PLW since 29.02.2012. which serves the requirements of internal communication as well as communication with the other units and offices of Railways. The Railway trunk lines are linked to New Delhi through NGN/OFC system.
 
Apart from above, following other telecommunication facilities are being operated: -
  • 36 BSNL Telephone, 2 PRI CKT.
  • One 1GbPS &100MbPS lease line of Rail Tel and 300MbPS from BSNL  is working which  serves the internet facility to all supervisors & officers
  • In this Exchange 90 intercom services are also provided.
 
7.  PLW Camp Office at Tilak Bridge, New Delhi:
All the electrical and other air-conditioning/ cooling equipments provided at PLW Camp Office, Tilak Bridge, New Delhi are also being maintained by Electrical Department. A small DG set of 15 KVA is also provided for camp office emergency supply.

Awards and Achievements
  • PLW participated in Punjab  state Energy Conservation Competition   organized by Punjab Energy Development agency (PEDA)  and secured SECOND POSITION Prize/Award with a shield, certificate of Merit and cash award amounting to Rs. 30000/- for the best Energy conservation efforts under the category of manufacturing enterprises, sub category of large industries among the Punjab state in Nov.2018.
  • PLW participated in 6th SMART CITIES INDIA AWARD 2019, organized by Exhibition Group of India at New Delhi. About 3000 applications received in the category of “SMART ENERGY AWARD” among them 238 participants finally selected by jury. PLW/Patiala  got selection among top  three and secured First Position in the  category of “GREEN ENERGY AWARD”.
  • PLW participated in Punjab  state Energy Conservation Competition   organized by Punjab Energy Development agency (PEDA)  and secured SECOND POSITION Prize/Award with a shield, certificate of Merit and cash award amounting to Rs. 30000/- for the best Energy conservation efforts under the category of manufacturing enterprises, sub category of large industries among the Punjab state in 2019.
  • PLW participated in 20th NATIONAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN ENERGY MANAGEMENT-2019, organized by CII Hyderabadand recognized as Energy Efficient Unit.
  • PLW participated in NATIONAL ENERGY CONSERVATION AWARD for the year 2018-19 organized by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under Ministry of Power New Delhi and achieved “FIRST” position among other railway production Units.
    • A Shield and Certificate of Merit was given to DMW by Honorable Minister of States (IC), Ministry of Power on 14.12.2019.  
  • PLW participated in online process for “Golden Peacock Energy Efficiency Award 2020” Organised by Golden Peacock Awards Secretariat, Institute of Director, New Delhi in the month of August 2020. PLW/PTA scored highest marks and declared   the “ winner of Golden Peacock Award for Energy Efficiency” for the year 2020 among Government (Railway) sector. A shield and Certificate of Merit has been presented to PLW/PTA
  • PLW participated in Punjab State Level Energy Conservation Award organized by PEDA CHANDIGARH and has received a Certificate of Merit and a cash award amounting to Rs. 30,000/- in form of cheque as the Second Prize under the category of Commercial Building, sub-category of Hospital Buildings for taking extra efforts for Efficient, Utilization, Management and Conservation of Energy during the year 2018-19 & 2019-20
  • PLW also participated in ‘22nd National Award for Excellence in Energy Management’ organized by CII Hyderabad from 24-27 August 2021 and has been conferred with ‘Energy Efficient Unit’ continuously for the 3rd year.
  • PLW  also participated in ‘23rd National Award for Excellence in Energy Management’ organized by CII Hyderabad from 23-25 August 2022 and has been conferred with ‘Energy Efficient Unit’ continuously for the 4th year.
